Godzilla vs. Kong pits two legendary foes against one other, with the fate of the Earth at risk. Kong and his guards arrive at Jia, a small orphaned child with whom Kong has formed an unbreakable bond of love and devotion, after a perilous journey. They find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla. It's only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep inside the Earth's core.
Godzilla and Kong are the only live Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after Godzilla defeated his alien foe Ghidorah. A storm generated by Ghidorah combined with the storm cell that surrounds Skull Island has caused its climate to become unstable, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulates the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language.
However, when Jia comes to Kong and gives him a doll, the Titan, realizing that he is inside the biodome, quickly throws a tree at it.
To assist them in navigating to the Hollow Earth, Nathan travels to Skull Island and approaches his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with the idea of using Kong as their navigator to guide them to the energy source, as Skull Island is no longer able to contain him and allow him to survive (due to Kong's size). Though Ilene first refuses, explaining that Godzilla will seek Kong immediately upon his removal from Skull Island, she eventually agrees after being persuaded by Nathan that they must undertake this mission in order to put an end to Godzilla's rampage and also locate Kong a new home.
Nathan, Ilene, Jia, and an Apex crew lead by Walter's daughter Maia board a customized barge with Kong locked up to prevent him from escaping. Kong gets restless and anxious one rainy night, but Jia soothes him down by enabling her and Kong to clasp fingers in solidarity while Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. The following day, Ilene tells Nathan about how she raised Jia as her adopted daughter when violent and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and their parents, but Jia was the sole survivor since Kong was the one who protected her, which led to the two creating a relationship.
As the Titan approaches and fights the troops before capsizing the barge and almost drowning Kong and the others aboard, Jia detects Godzilla's arrival by sensing vibrations through the ship. Thankfully, Nathan unlocks Kong's shackles, enabling him to fight Godzilla underwater long enough for him to swim to the surface and tip the barge back on its head, sparing the party from drowning. Kong climbs aboard a nearby aircraft copyright to confront Godzilla, who also climbs aboard to confront Kong. Before fighter aircraft distract Godzilla enough for Kong to force him back into the water, the two Titans trade ferocious punches. Godzilla unleashes his atomic breath from under the copyright, but Kong jumps off to avoid the explosion, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and pull him deep into the water, aiming to drown the Titan.
However, when Godzilla is stunned by depth charges, the combat is split up, allowing Kong to surface for air and re-engage the fight.
When Nathan and Ilene realize that Kong will not be able to survive in the cold and that they will not be able to return him to Skull Island, Nathan inquires as to whether Kong will go through the tunnel if he believes there are others like him down there. Ilene responds by telling Jia to inquire as to whether Kong's family may be down there, prompting the Titan to enter the tunnel and the teams to follow him in their HEAVs.
Walter aims to use the Hollow Earth's energy to overcome Mechagodzilla's restrictions. So Pinnacle can replace him and all the Titans so humans may become Earth's apex species, Madison realizes. Trying to find a way out, Madison and the others stumble onto a room where Ren is sitting inside Ghidorah's severed head, which Apex acquired from Alan Jonah after Godzilla ate it five years ago.
Kong and Nathan's squad then begin their quest, finally arriving at a massive stone temple that belonged to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old struggle between Kong's and Godzilla's races as they explore the inside, and Kong discovers an ancient axe crafted from a dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's species before settling upon a massive throne. Kong discovers that the same power source that Nathan's team needs to increase Mechagodzilla's power supply can also recharge Kong's axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the discovery of the century, Maia and the Apex crew utilize spider-like drones to collect the power source and transport it back to their Hong Kong headquarters. Maia orders her soldiers to fire at Nathan's crew, but Kong screams passionately in defense. Meanwhile, Mechagodzilla sends a signal to Godzilla, who detects the machine's activation and rushes towards Hong Kong.
It's a good thing Godzilla can't fly. In their HEAV, Maia and her crew try to depart but Kong grabs it on their way out and smashes it in his palm, killing Maia and her staff within.
Kong and Godzilla both recover and get back to their feet, with Godzilla searching for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself on a skyscraper. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold intending to strangle him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury against Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong subdued and pinned down, Godzilla furiously roars at his opponent in a show of dominance, but Kong, defeated, angrily roars in defiance against Godzilla.
Back in the Apex base, Walter excitedly orders Ren to send out Mechagodzilla to kill Godzilla. Though Ren warns him against using the new Hollow Earth energy source without testing, Walter ignores his pleas and coldly orders him to activate the mecha. At the same time, Bernie, Madison, and Josh are caught by security for infiltrating Apex headquarters and are taken to Walter. Madison accuses Walter of provoking Godzilla into war and for causing all of this in the first place, though he confidently explains that he accepted the responsibility for giving mankind a chance to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.
Mechagodzilla, under the influence of the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks, goes wild unexpectedly, murdering Walter with a sweep of its palm and electrocuting Ren when Walter's back is turned. Ghidorah's mind has now taken control of Mechagodzilla, who escapes the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain before Godzilla can stop him. Mechagodzilla attacks Godzilla with a hail of missiles as soon as it comes into contact with him, setting the stage for an all-out fight.
After waking up, Kong sees the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before meeting up with Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't his true foe. Though Kong does not believe her at first as he continues to witness Godzilla being defeated by Mechagodzilla, Jia eventually discloses the truth to him, revealing that the robot, not Godzilla, is the "real" adversary. Kong ultimately accepts and puts his animosity aside before going into combat to assist Godzilla while repairing his dislocated limb.
After seeing Kong holding his axe, Godzilla charges it by blasting it with his atomic breath. This allows Kong to dismantle Mechagodzilla from head to toe and then sit down to relax after raising his trophy and letting out a great shout of victory.
The site's summary of audience reviews expressed a similar opinion, stating that "This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects." Indeed, reviewers generally praised the film's monster brawling element, but some expressed disappointment at the "half-baked" human element of the film. The film was credited with ending a box office slump fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic, having earned an estimated $48.5 million dollars in the U.S. box office by the Sunday morning of five-day weekend release period. WarnerMedia did not release numbers for the film's reception on HBO Max, but stated that it was a film that viewers were watching more than once and that the film had a larger viewer audience than any series or film released on the service since it launched. The film also saw massive international ticket sales, with an additional haul of approximately $236 million in non-U.S. markets.
