Apex another working title for Godzilla vs. Kong, is an American science fiction monster picture set for release in 2021, after Legendary Pictures' Godzilla: King of Monsters in 2019 and serving as a prequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

Although initially scheduled for May 29, 2020, Godzilla Vs. Kong had a rocky development and had to be postponed many times before finally being released on May 21, 2021, which was originally scheduled for March 13, 2020. On March 26, 2021, the film was rescheduled for release before being released on March 31, 2021, the original scheduled release date in the United States of America. Also available on HBO Max until April 30, 2021 was the film's theatrical release.

The film is directed by Adam Wingard, produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers, and has a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, based on a scenario by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. In addition to King of the Monsters, Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields collaborated on it. King of Monsters ends with Godzilla and Kong engaged in a massive fight five years later following Ghidorah's rampage.

Godzilla vs. Kong pits two of the world's most feared monsters against one other in a fight that might decide the destiny of the whole planet. Jia, an orphaned child with whom Kong has created a special and deep relationship, joins Kong and his guards on a risky adventure to locate his rightful home. When Godzilla unleashes his fury, they find themselves in the path of the monster, whose trail of destruction cuts over the whole planet. Despite the titanic battle sparked by unknown forces, the mystery surrounding Earth's interior has only just begun to be unraveled!

Meanwhile, Bernie Hayes, an Apex Cybernetics employee and presenter of the Titan Truth Podcast, exfiltrates material indicating dark operations at a Pensacola Apex facility, but Godzilla suddenly strikes as he finishes downloading the data. Bernie finds a curious piece of technology among the wreckage of the facility that looks like a big robotic eye during Godzilla's attack.

Following the assault, the public has turned against Godzilla, who is no longer seen as humanity's savior. Madison Russell, now an adult and a regular listener to Bernie's podcast, is concerned when she hears about Godzilla's latest assault on her school. She attempts unsuccessfully after school to reason with her widowed father Mark (who is serving as Monarch's director) about a potential lead on the source of Godzilla's rampage, but he ignores all she says, saying merely that beasts, like humans, may evolve. Madison later enlists the aid of her closest friend Josh Valentine to track down the person responsible for Godzilla's rampage and uncover Apex's mysteries.

Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO, Walter Simmons, recruits Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist who has become a Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their search for a powerful energy source in the Hollow Earth, an underground world beneath the Earth and the hidden home of the Titans, which is located beneath the surface of the Earth. The fact that Nathan's brother attempted to explore the Hollow Earth and was killed by a powerful anti-gravity field within the tunnel initially makes him wary of going into the Hollow Earth. Apex has invented and built Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, specialized vehicles that are capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure, and Walter explains this to him, and he finally accepts.

To assist them in navigating to the Hollow Earth, Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets with his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with the idea of using Kong as their navigator to guide them to the energy source, as Skull Island is no longer able to contain him and allow him to survive (due to Kong's size). Though Ilene first refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong immediately upon his removal from Skull Island, she eventually agrees when Nathan convinces her that they must undertake this expedition in order to put an end to Godzilla's rampage and also find a new home for Kong.

The Apex crew, lead by Walter's daughter Maia, board a customized barge with a barely drugged Kong locked up to keep him from escaping. Jia soothes Kong down by enabling her and Kong to clasp fingers in solidarity while Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. The next day, Ilene tells Nathan about how she raised Jia as her adopted daughter after a series of deadly and unpredictable storms killed all the Iwi and her parents, but Jia was the only one to survive since Kong shielded her, leading to the two of them developing a close friendship.

Their struggle is interrupted up, however, when Godzilla is thrown off by depth charges, allowing Kong to surface for air.

There, the three disembark and discover Apex's ultimate weapon "Mechagodzilla" a mechanized counterpart of Godzilla being controlled by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son and Walter's chief technology officer Ren Serizawa. To put Mechagodzilla's strength to the test against the Titans, Walter summons a huge adult Skullcrawler designated "Number 10" into the room as soon as the mecha is ignited. The beast is on the point of attacking Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is captured and detained by Mechagodzilla, who cleaves the Skullcrawler in two with a tremendous red energy beam, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. However, the test is cut short as the mecha instantly turns down owing to power supply limits.

Walter intends to vanquish Mechagodzilla by harnessing the power of the Hollow Earth. Apex is assaulting Godzilla because he and the Titans are being replaced by humans. Mechagodzilla is being controlled by Ren, who is seated within Apex's severed Ghidorah head five years after it was obtained from Alan Jonah.

Following that, Kong and Nathan's squad continue on their trek, finally arriving to a massive stone temple that previously belonged to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old struggle between Kong's and Godzilla's races as they explore the inside, and Kong discovers an ancient axe crafted from a dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's race before sitting on a massive throne. Kong discovers that the same power source that Nathan's crew uses to enhance Mechagodzilla's power supply can also be used to replenish the axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the discovery of the century, Maia and the Apex crew employ spider-like drones to collect the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters. Maia orders her guards to fire upon Nathan's crew, only for Kong to scream loudly in their defense. In the meanwhile, Mechagodzilla sends a signal to Godzilla, who detects the machine's activation and goes directly for Hong Kong.

It's a good thing Godzilla doesn't have the ability to fly. When Maia and her crew attempt to leave their HEAV, Kong pulls it from under their feet and crushes it in his hand, killing Maia and her crew within.

It is shown that Kong and Godzilla have both regained consciousness and are able to stand on their own two feet. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold intending to strangle him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury against Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong trapped and held down, Godzilla unleashes an angry roar of defiance, but Kong remains defiant in the face of defeat.

Walter tells Ren to dispatch Mechagodzilla to slay Godzilla back at Apex headquarters. The mecha is activated, despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without testing. The security guards also apprehend Bernie, Madison, and Josh and bring them to Walter. While Walter denies inciting Godzilla's war and triggering the whole mess, Madison accuses him of accepting responsibility for giving humans a chance to confront Godzilla and the Titans.

When the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks affect Mechagodzilla, the robot goes berserk, murdering Walter with a sweep of its hand and electrocuting Ren when Walter's back is turned while he talks about his invention. Ghidorah's mind has now taken control of Mechagodzilla, which escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and attacks the city before Godzilla can stop it. Prior to engaging Godzilla, Mechagodzilla launches a salvo of missiles at its biological counterpart to close the gap.

After regaining consciousness, Kong observes the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before encountering Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla is not really his adversary. Though Kong first disbelieves her as he continues to witness Godzilla being annihilated by Mechagodzilla, Jia exposes to him the fact that the robot is the "real" adversary, not Godzilla. Kong eventually accepts and sets aside his hatred before entering fight to assist Godzilla in repairing his dislocated limb.

Kong jumps atop Mechagodzilla and deflect the red energy beam into the air, sparing Godzilla's life. Godzilla helps Kong battle Mechagodzilla after realizing Kong saved his life and that he is not an adversary.

They succeed in turning the tide by combining their forces, but the robot is much more powerful and eventually defeats them. It is revealed that Kong had previously lost his axe when fighting Godzilla, and he reclaims it from the ruins and tries to use it against Mechagodzilla, but his weapon is rendered ineffectual due to the loss of its charge. With nothing left to do, Bernie takes out a flask of booze and suggests that everyone have a drink. However, Josh, having an idea, takes the flask out of Bernie's hand and pours the contents of the drink all over the control panel, short-circuiting Mechagodzilla's controls and allowing Godzilla and Kong to regroup and retake the upper hand.

Godzilla notices Kong holding his axe and supercharges it with his atomic breath, allowing Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb by limb and tear its head off before resting his treasure.

Later on, Monarch constructed an observation post in the Hollow Earth. Kong is seen by Ilene, Nathan, and Jia on his morning walk. Kong climbs atop a rock, banging his chest and embracing Jia as his new home and realm in his screaming proclamation of himself as King of the Hollow Earth.

This long-awaited blockbuster matchup makes it easy not to think about the so-so story and characters by serving up plenty of action and incredible effects. the site's assessment of audience evaluations said. A majority of critics were pleased with the monster fighting in the picture, while others were disappointed with the "half-baked" human aspect. After a five-day weekend release period, the picture was predicted to have made $48.5 million dollars at the U.S. box office. As for how the movie performed on HBO Max, WarnerMedia declined to provide specific figures but did say that it had the highest viewership of any series or feature aired on the channel since its introduction, with many people tuning in many times and seeing it multiple times over. Additionally, the movie was a huge hit in other countries, grossing an extra $236 million.

Chandler's presence in King Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong establishes him as the only actor to appear in a King Kong picture, a Godzilla film, and a Godzilla crossover feature.

It is the shortest film in the MonsterVerse, clocking in at little over an hour and a half.

The sequence in which Kong slams his dislocated right shoulder against a structure in order to reposition it might be a reference to Martin Riggs' iconic ability of the same sort in the Lethal Weapon series.

Numerous allusions to Neon Genesis Evangelion are made throughout the film:
